The Peace Silver Dollar coin complete set, first issued in 1921, is one of the most modern and humanistic designs in American coin history. It is not merely a rare coin, but a solemn commemoration of the world's return to peace after World War I. Issued to commemorate the end of World War I, it symbolizes the eternity of harmony and hope.
- Core Design Details:
Obverse: A young Liberty wears a radiant crown, symbolizing peace and rebirth. Below is inscribed "IN GOD WE TRUST".
Reverse: A vulture stands atop a mountain, wings folded, gazing at the rising sun in the distance. The word "PEACE" is prominently engraved on the rock beneath its feet, and it holds an olive branch rather than an arrow in its talons, expressing America's commitment to peace rather than war.
- Designer: Anthony de Francisci. Behind the design of this coin lies a romantic and touching story:
Design Competition: In 1921, the American Fine Arts Committee held a design competition to replace the Morgan Silver Dollar. The 34-year-old Italian immigrant artist Anthony de Francisci defeated several renowned designers, including the designer of the Bison Nickel, to win the competition.
The Secret of the Model: The Statue of Liberty's head on the obverse of the coin was modeled after the designer's wife, Teresa de Francisci. Teresa recounted that as a child, she imitated the Statue of Liberty's pose while traveling on a ship bound for America, and this dream was ultimately realized in her husband's work.
Design Concept: Unlike the solemn, Athena-like goddess of war depicted on previous coins, the Goddess of Liberty on the Peace Silver Dollar appears younger and gentler, wearing a radiant crown, symbolizing a new era full of hope.
- Years of Issue
1921: This was the only "high-relief" Peace Dollar issued on a large scale. Because high relief was too difficult to mint and prone to wear, the U.S. Mint mandated a reduction in relief height starting in 1922.
1922-1928: This period saw large-scale circulation of the Peace Dollar. All coins were changed
1934-1935:After a brief halt to production during the Great Depression, minting resumed briefly due to the requirements of the Silver Purchase Act.
